Volunteer with us > Volunteer Protocol
The following is protocol for all volunteers.
- If you are scheduled at a facility, please call the group leader and/or office to let them know if you will be unable to attend a visit. This will give us an opportunity to get another volunteer to fill in so we are not short-handed.
- Wear Sunshine Friends, Inc. (SFI) identification (Name badge will be provided).
- Present a clean, pleasant, and courteous appearance. Keep in mind that some residents/patients may have allergies to scented lotion or perfumes and try to refrain from using them before a visit.
- Address all residents by Ms., Mr., or Mrs., unless otherwise noted or requested.
- Refrain from giving advice or making personal comments relative to resident's lives or lifestyles.
- Direct comments or concerns about those involved in the visit and/or procedures as they arise, to the designated Group Leader.
- Each facility holds visits in a different area which may be in patient rooms or common areas, if you are unsure as to where you are supposed to visit, ask the Group Leader or the facility activity director. Always ask permission from a resident before entering his/her room.
- Handle all pets with care! If discipline is necessary, make it swift and discreet. Yelling and severe methods of discipline are prohibited. If pet becomes overexcited, tired or nervous, excuse yourself after informing the Group Leader.
- Sessions are approximately 45 minutes long. This is not a set time limit. Take in to account your pet, yourself and the residents.
- To prevent burnout and stress in both pets & handlers, please note the following visit limiations: 1)A pet may not visit fore more than 2 hours in any one day. 2)A pet may not visit more than 2 times in any one week.
- Visit during scheduled hours only unless express permission from SFI is given. If you wish to visit during a different time period as a SFI volunteer please contact a board member with your request.
